Is the Word of God practical?

We should give importance to the Word of God in our lives. We all read the bible whenever possible. We know the teaching of Jesus but many of us don’t give importance to the Word of God in our lives. We don’t take the Word of God seriously. We have read a number of times – don’t hate others, don’t take revenge, do not keep unforgiveness but love your enemies, not just forgive your enemies but love your enemies. These are the words of God. However, when it comes to practicing these words in our lives, it becomes very difficult. 

Sometimes we don’t even try to practice the Word of God. We just ignore it. And if someone says to us, ‘you are supposed to love your enemy.’ We just turn around and say, ‘Jesus can do it, but these things are not practical in today’s world. The bible, the teaching of Jesus is not practical in today’s world.’ They reject it. They make fun of it. They even deny it. Sometimes people even misinterpret the word of God in such a way that it accommodates their own desire. This attitude is dangerous. 

In Isaiah 5:24 we read, “Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their roots will become rotten, and their blossom go up like dust; for they have rejected the instructions of the Lord of hosts, and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.” Let’s understand what this verse is saying- the stubble, dry grass catches fire easily. It burns to ashes within seconds. In the same way our roots, which means the foundation of our existence, will become rotten. Our blossoms, which are our children, our future generations, will go up like dust. Why would this happen? Because they have rejected the instructions of the Lord and despised the word of God. Hence, it is important to keep this Word of God and explanation in mind before we deny or make fun of any Word of God given to us in the bible. It is dangerous to reject and deny the Word of God knowingly.  

Maybe it is difficult to fulfill the demands of the Word of God but we should try our best to comply with it. We have to keep trying and as we keep trying, we will grow. It won’t be easy but we have to keep trying to achieve it. Let me give you an example, a gymnast, in the beginning of their training, isn’t able to do any of the complicated routines they do at the competition level. They start to train and practice every day. They fall, they hurt themselves yet they keep practicing for days and weeks together. Slowly and steadily, through all the failure it becomes easier to do the tricks and exercises. After months or years of practice and training they are able to be flawless in their routines. In the same way we should try to put the Word of God into practice because the word of God is practical. It is achievable but with practice. 

To prove that the word of God is practical, we have our saints, they put the Word of God to practice even in this century. Though we are not perfect, we should try our best. It is better to try than to deny the word of the Lord. Let us close our eyes and ask forgiveness from God for the times we have denied, rejected and ignored the word of God instead of accepting and trying it.
